In 1973 for Indianapolis of the Triple-A American Association, Griffey hit .327 and earned a promotion to the Reds when outfielder Bobby Tolan went on the disabled list. The 23-year-old Griffey made his big-league debut in Cincinnati on August 25 against the St. Louis Cardinals. His first major-league hit came in the third inning when he doubled to left off Tom Murphy. He hit well the rest of the regular season, posting a .384 average in 25 games, though he was just 1-for-7 in the NLCS loss to the New York Mets.
