Roger Maris was an American professional baseball player who was born on September 10, 1934, and passed away on December 14, 1985. He is best known for his legendary 1961 season with the New York Yankees.

Maris played as an outfielder and first baseman throughout his career in Major League Baseball (MLB). He began his professional career with the Cleveland Indians in 1957 and later joined the Kansas City Athletics. However, it was his time with the New York Yankees from 1960 to 1966 that defined his career.

In 1961, Maris achieved his greatest accomplishment by breaking one of baseball's most hallowed records - Babe Ruth's single-season home run record. During that historic season, Maris hit 61 home runs, surpassing Ruth's record of 60, which had stood for 34 years. Maris' achievement was met with controversy, as some felt that his accomplishment was lessened due to the longer seasons compared to Ruth's era. Nevertheless, it solidified Maris' place in baseball history.

Maris was a seven-time All-Star and a two-time American League MVP, winning the award in 1960 and 1961. He also helped the Yankees win three World Series championships in 1961, 1962, and 1967.

Off the field, Maris was known for his quiet and humble demeanor. Despite the immense pressure and scrutiny he faced during his record-breaking season, he maintained his composure and professionalism. After retiring from baseball in 1968, Maris worked in various business ventures before his untimely death from cancer at the age of 51.

Roger Maris remains an iconic figure in baseball history. His record-breaking season and his impact on the game are still celebrated to this day.
